Are Eye Problems after Eye Laser Surgery Still Possible?
For many, the reason why they get eye laser surgery is so they can avoid the eye problems that they can encounter. Sadly though, this is not entirely true. Presbyopia is one of the eye conditions that can develop even if you had Lasik or perfect vision. This eye problem usually affects people when they are in their 40s and 50s. The condition is the eye’s inability to focus at any distance, whether near or far. Usually, this is noticed when reading fine print starts blurring.
Presbyopia is rampant throughout the United States. Based on the 2008 data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 135 million Americans aged 40 and above have this condition. Even if you had eye surgery before, there is still a chance you can get the condition.
The experience presbyopia causes to people is that they need to hold magazines, books, menus, newspapers and the other reading materials at least an arm’s length just so they can properly make out the words. In addition, they can also get eye strain, headaches or fatigued if they perform near work.
Many doctors don’t see eye to eye on what presbyopia is caused by. There are some optometrists which believe that the stiffening of the lens adds to this condition. Meanwhile, there are also others who suggest the condition is related to the continuous growth of the atrophy of the muscles which are controlling the lens.
Fortunately, there is still an answer to presbyopia. The first option is to get eyewear which is specially formulated for a presbyope. They can either choose to get bifocal eyeglasses or multifocal contact lenses so they can see well. Aside from eyewear, another option is to get another eye laser surgery procedure. Surgical treatments for this condition include PresbyLASIK, Lasik, Refractive Lens Exchange, and Presbyopia- Correcting Intraocular Lenses.
